Emerald Isle: More Than Just Sand and Surf
If you’re planning a trip to Emerald Isle, you’re probably already counting down to some serious beach time. That’s a given. But let me pull back the curtain on all the other stuff you can get into around here. I’m talking family fun, cold drinks, local flavor, and a bit of adventure.
Whether you’re here on vacation, just moved in thanks to PCS orders, or you’re eyeing the area for an investment property—these are the spots locals actually go to when we’re not at the beach.
North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores
Image by The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores
- Sharks, sea turtles, river otters
- Epic living shipwreck exhibit
- Indoors = perfect for rainy days
The aquarium isn’t just a spot to distract your kids. It’s genuinely interesting, even for grown-ups. The living shipwreck setup is massive and gives you that deep-sea vibe without ever leaving the ground. You can knock out a few hours here easy, especially if the weather turns sideways like it tends to do in NC summers.
Parking is simple, tickets are budget-friendly, and the staff are cool and knowledgeable. Whether you’re flying solo, on a date, or wrangling kids, it’s a go-to.
Bogue Sound Distillery in Cape Carteret

- Locally-made vodka, gin, whiskey
- Veteran-owned and run
- Live music and chill crowd
The distillery right across the bridge, this is where you go when you need to relax with a solid drink in hand. The vibes are chill, and the folks are welcoming. It’s not some stuffy bar scene—it’s real people, real drinks, and sometimes live music.
Pull up, take the tour, and don’t be surprised if you walk out with a new favorite bottle (or two).
Hammocks Beach State Park & Bear Island

- Ferry to an uninhabited island
- Great for shell hunting and shark teeth
- Quiet, untouched natural beauty
If you want to really get away, Bear Island is your escape. Take the ferry over and enjoy a slice of nature that hasn’t been paved over yet. No boardwalks, no vendors—just peace and quiet.
Pro tip: pack water, snacks, sunscreen, and prepare to explore. You’ll come back with sandy feet and probably a few shark teeth in your pocket.
Mac Daddy’s in Cape Carteret

- Bowling, arcade, mini golf, and food
- Indoor/outdoor fun
- Family-friendly, but great for adults too

Mac Daddy’s is a favorite for locals because it’s consistent. Clean, fun, and enough to do whether you’re chasing toddlers or hanging with your buddies.
The food isn’t an afterthought either—grab a burger while you play a round of mini golf or try to dominate the air hockey table.
Fort Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach

- Civil War-era fort with real cannons
- Free admission
- Hiking trails and ocean views
This isn’t your average boring museum. You can walk the walls, explore the tunnels, and let the kids play war games with old cannons. The beach views aren’t bad either.
It’s a cool mix of history and nature that makes for a solid half-day adventure.
Salty Pirate Waterpark

- Water slides, splash zones, kid-friendly chaos
- Affordable and close by
- Quick cool-down on a hot day
Not the biggest waterpark in the world, but the Salty Pirate gets the job done. It’s a great way to keep the kids entertained (and exhausted) on a hot afternoon.
It’s easy to get to, parking is simple, and it won’t empty your wallet. Big win for parents.
The Growler in Emerald Isle

- Rotating taps of local NC brews
- No-fuss, laid-back vibe
- Grab a pint or take a growler to-go
Craft beer without the snobbery. The Growler is smack in the middle of Emerald Isle and offers a great selection without trying too hard. It’s unpretentious and perfect for grabbing a cold one after a long day.
Fill up a growler to take home or sip on-site—either way, you’re in for some quality local brews.
The Sweet Spot in Emerald Isle

- Ice cream, candy, beachy gifts
- Great for families (and dads who want ice cream)
- Convenient location
This place is basically vacation fuel. Whether it’s a reward for good behavior or just a craving, you’ll find something here. I’ve definitely blamed my kids for “needing” to stop here more than once.
Huge flavor selection, friendly staff, and worth the repeat visits.
Carteret County Speedway

- Small track, big energy
- Races most weekends
- Loud, fun, and local

You don’t need to be a racing fan to enjoy a night at the speedway. It’s grassroots, high-octane entertainment that’s easy to get into.
Grab a ticket, get loud, and enjoy the chaos. Bring earplugs if you’re sensitive, but don’t skip it.
Star Hill Golf Club in Cape Carteret

- 18-hole course, fair pricing
- Laid-back atmosphere
- Great for any skill level
Solid layout, no judgment, and a good time whether you shoot par or triple bogey. Star Hill gives you a reason to get outside, talk a little trash with your friends, and maybe chase a few lost balls around.
It’s a relaxing way to start the day or wind down a weekend.
